Everyone has their preferences, but donkey's years of history can't be wrong, Spences is the best wee chippie in town.

Old school to the core, this family establishment has them queued to the street every day. The man at the fryers, apparently local legend Bill, doesn't even look round to take your order, looking at you from a long mirror above him, greeting you with a simple 'What's yours?'.

He says it to everyone regardless of the length of queue, but the man has the memory of an elephant, timing massive orders of chips, fish, pasties and suppers with the dexterity of a dancer. And the chips, ooooh the chips, hot and vinegary and wrapped in paper are so fine. You can even sit in if you are lucky enough to get a seat, but so long as you get your chips you are a winner.

Good wee chippy ,not that fond of sitting in but I like it as a take away chippy. Owner and staff very friendly and chatty, pics up of local sports stars and old newspaper articles. Not sure on opening hours as sometimes you pass it and its open other days its shut.

On my way home from my cousins house I decided I didn't want to cook my dinner this evening so I nipped in to my local chippy.... Well it's not that local but I'm willing to make the journey as I think it's the best chippy in Belfast. As I entered the chippy the queue was quite long but I expect this in Spence's as its the most superior chippy in the area. The young lady operating the till work her way down the queue to make sure everyone's food was ready for the time they arrived to the front of the queue and she worked with the cooks to keep things moving quickly. I collected my fish supper and called at the co-op on the way home to pick up a batch loaf. When entering my house I went straight to the kitchen to butter several slices of batch bread then sat down to enjoy my fish supper butties with a splash of salad cream. I have to say there is nowhere in Belfast I have tried in my extensive career of fish supper eating that matches up to Spences. I'd highly recommend this establishment to anyone who wants to try quality fish and chips.
